Internships
Over the past few years, the number of young people looking to enter the construction industry has increased dramatically. Across the Eastern region, the industry needs 9,000 new entrants a year just to keep pace with current demand. Training these new entrants and giving them the skills they need to contribute from their first day on site is a key priority for the Construction Academy.
In order to do this, we have developed an innovative new way of providing training, which provides a solid grounding in craft before the trainee comes to the employer, accelerates the achievement of level 2 qualifications, and ensures that only the most motivated and committed young people, with a genuine desire to succeed in the industry, are placed with employers.
How does it work?
Our interns spend year training at a college, where they complete an Intermediate Construction Award in their chose trade. During this time, they complete a short work placement with an employer, to give them exposure to the real world of work and valuable experience on site.
Once they have completed their initial training, interns then spend up to six months working for an employer, and are assessed for their NVQ2, which in conjunction with the qualifications gained in the first year, give them an Apprenticeship qualification. At the end of this period, the employer interviews them to determine whether or not they are suitable for continued employment within the company.
If the intern is successful in gaining employment, they are guaranteed a place on an Advanced Apprenticeship scheme, which provides them with a valuable level 3 qualification, and which enables them to make a tangible difference to their employer’s business.
What does it cost?
Training and assessment under the internship scheme is free of charge. The only cost to you is the cost of paying the intern for the six months they work for you, which is only fair considering the difference they will make to your business!
